OVAL (Markus Popp) & zeitkratzer
»Composing the composer« or »Instant composing« or improvisation as composition at the moment of creation? Perhaps. This evening’s concert title is as ambiguous as it is unambiguous. Both electronics artist Markus Popp (alias OVAL) and ensemble zeitkratzer are as if predestined to provide the answers, even at their first meeting. In the last two decades Popp has made an outstanding name for himself as a sound designer on the contemporary electronic music scene, with his digitally produced sound installations in the gap between strict formalism and repetitive processuality, between radical »cut and paste« aesthetic and improvised live electronics, between provocative noise and broad dynamics. ensemble zeitkratzer’s approach is less radical yet music-aesthetically interesting: this ten-strong formation always leads audiences to the overlapping zone where improvisation can emerge from the interpretation of works, of new music for instance. TRIPCLUBBING, the KölnMusik/Kölner Philharmonie concert series for musical borderlines and tightrope walks, has three dates in the festival calendar. With its informal, communicative club atmosphere, the Alter Wartesaal is the perfect venue for awesome, impressive concert events that are often experimental and invariably extravagant.
Good interview with Markus Popp here.
