10-years after their foundation, and after a 4-year break, berlin audio / video project rechenzentrum are finally releasing a new dvd with the programmatic title silence. rechenzentrum have been making musical and visual changes: the electronic surface of the tracks has developed into a predominantly electro-acoustic world of sound, receiving its impulse from marc weiser’s long-standing membership of the zeitkratzer international ensemble for contemporary music (who are currently releasing two dvds with compositions of lou reed and ianni xenakis on aspodel). as well as the purely instrumental tracks, there are 3 vocal tracks by rechenzentrum themselves, which various critics have rated as being somewhere between marvin gaye and david sylvian in terms of the vocal sound, and which expand the rechenzentrum universe, giving it a timeless pop facet. the visual side is also rejuvenated, currently consisting mainly of manipulated images of handcrafted black and white drawings by video artist lillevan that form a symbiotic unity with the music. inspired by russian icon painter andrej rjublev, to whom andrei tarkowsky dedicated his black and white film of the same name, rechenzentrum set out on a journey into the strange worlds of contemplative states of existence. a meditative, and in the best sense self-referential musical-visual system of coordinates between electro-acoustic melancholy and humoresque sketches of the club landscape. the icon painters of the eastern church did not regard themselves as artists wanting to express subjective experience. instead, they saw themselves as existing in the tradition of the medium, through whom the divine experience of existenc could be lived. they worked purposefully on their icons, sometimes for decades, completely immersed in their work, which sought to open the door to another world. their immutable faith was the key to the door to the numinous world of omnipresent silence. it is with this mental baggage that rechenzentrum sets out on their expedition: submerged rhythms of continents never seen, melodies thought lost, and legends from ancient times surface in the here and now. what remainsis a memory of a present composed of question marks. speechlessness alone is the key to incomprehension of the world. …read press reviews
